Yes, that was an earthquake – Magnitude 5.6 to be exact with an aftershock tremor of Magnitude 3.9.
Geoscience Australia reported the Magnitude 5.6 earthquake at a depth of 2 km, with its epicentre just east of Murgon and tremors felt from Rockhampton to Lismore in northern NSW.
As yet, no major damage has been reported but more aftershocks are expected in coming days.
But before you worry that the seismic effects could displace water columns and cause a tsunami, The Bureau of Meteorology tsunami warning system has “no expected threats” recorded.
While significant earthquakes are rare on the Sunshine Coast – with only six recorded within 150 km since the 1950s and the strongest, a Magnitude 4.9, occurring 40 years ago – residents are still encouraged to stay informed and prepared for any future events.
